Domestic record: Although they could only finish third in the Portuguese Liga for the second season in a row, it was still enough to earn Benfica a place in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League. It was a close contest, with FC Porto just two points ahead and only a solitary point separating them from city rivals Sporting Clube de Portugal.
European record: Their appearance in the UEFA Champions League was Benfica's fourth in succession. Benfica booked their place in the group stage thanks to a 4-1 defeat of FK Austria Wien. By finishing third in Group F behind Manchester United FC and Celtic FC but ahead of FC København, Benfica transferred to the UEFA Cup. They defeated FC Dinamo 1948 Bucureşti 3-1 on aggregate in the Round of 32 before a 4-3 triumph over two legs in the last 16 against Paris Saint-Germain FC. However, RCD Espanyol ended their hopes with a 3-2 quarter-final success on aggregate.
